First-time driver over 40? Here's car insurance.
Many people obtain their driver's license during their adolescence. Some take a little longer. For some people, obtaining their license is not a necessity, or they were unable to do so, or perhaps they drove a vehicle in their country of origin, but they have just arrived in Canada and their driving record has not been kept.
For whatever reason, you are over 40 and you need car insurance.
Being a new driver, or being new to driving in another country, can be a daunting prospect. There are so many different things to keep track of, and it's easy to feel overwhelmed. If you're over 40, you may already have so much on your plate: a family, a home, a job.
While it's not impossible to get car insurance as a first-time driver over 40, there are some things you should be aware of regarding the coverage you need. Panda7 will also provide some tips on how to lower your car insurance premium, as new drivers can see inflated rates for the first few years.
Coverage for new drivers over 40
If you just got your driver's license and are over 40, congratulations! An achievement is an achievement, no matter what stage of life you're in. The first thing to note, as a new driver over 40, whether you're new to the country or not, is that Quebec's auto insurance system works differently from most other provinces. Like other provinces, Quebec requires a certain level of coverage. You'll need to have at least $50,000 in liability coverage. This is the most basic form of insurance and will cover property damage you cause to others while driving your vehicle. There are different requirements for commercial vehicles in Quebec, but let's start with personal insurance.
All Quebec residents are covered by what is known as Quebec's public automobile insurance. This plan aims to provide compensation in the event of injury or death resulting from an accident that occurs in the province or elsewhere in the world. With certain limitations, tourists visiting Quebec are also covered by this plan, depending on their percentage of responsibility in the accident.
Additional coverage can be purchased separately. This can include options such as collision and disruption coverage and comprehensive coverage. Collision and disruption coverage is optional and can be purchased for an additional premium through a private insurer. Collision and disruption coverage covers all damage to your vehicle resulting from an at-fault accident involving one or more other vehicles, as well as damage to your vehicle and stationary objects, such as streetlights, fences, and more.
Comprehensive coverage is also optional and can be purchased for an additional premium. There are a few exceptions, such as wildlife hitting your car, but comprehensive is designed to cover all damage not resulting from a collision. This includes falling objects, theft, vandalism, fire, and hail.
Car insurance costs for new drivers over 40
Is car insurance expensive if you're driving for the first time as a person over 40? Insurance companies calculate rates using a system established based on statistics and data from hundreds of thousands of drivers and the various claims they've received. Currently, younger drivers are statistically more likely to be involved in accidents than older drivers. The fatality rate for young drivers is three times higher than for those aged 35 to 45. Therefore, older drivers may not necessarily be charged more frequently simply because of their age.
They will, however, see higher rates because they don't have a longer driving record or driving history compared to other drivers. Someone who carried their license from age 18 to 40 can pay significantly less than a driver who just got their license at 40.
So how do we fight against this? We can't go back and get our permits earlier.
Panda7 has some tips to reduce your insurance rates as a new driver over 40:
- Take a driving course. These courses are very valuable and can refresh or teach new driving skills that will sharpen your edge and keep you calm behind the wheel. Approved courses can also save you 10 to 30% on your insurance.
- A letter of experience. You can ask your previous insurer in your home country to arrange a letter of experience that will describe your years of driving experience and your claims history. If your previous claims were satisfactory, your new insurer may treat you as an experienced driver rather than a new one. Letters of experience are only applicable if you are from another country with a driving system similar to Canada's.
- Increase your deductible. A higher deductible can lower your premiums, as long as you're comfortable with the amount you'll pay out of pocket. You can pay a deductible of $250 to $500 or more to get a significant discount on your insurance premiums.
Insurance premiums are higher for new drivers because data shows that experience pays off. Drivers are more likely to be involved in an accident during their first few years of driving, regardless of their age.
While getting your driver's license is certainly an exciting event, understanding how to manage your insurance as an older, less experienced driver is a great way to secure affordable coverage.
