How nature improves our mental and physical health
We all know that being in nature is good for us. For some of us, when we were younger, our parents may have mentioned that we should get outside much more often. But how exactly is nature good for us? It turns out that being in nature—whether it's for a camping trip, a walk, a workout, or simply to get some fresh air—is incredibly beneficial for both our mental and physical health. Here's how nature can improve our mental and physical well-being.
This can make us more creative.
By taking the time to return to the present moment and to be more serene, nature gives us the opportunity to question our creative goals while in a calmer state of mind. Nature can even stimulate the early phases of the creative process, known as the "preparation" and "incubation" phases. If you ever find yourself stuck on a project, take a walk in nature! Who knows what ideas you might have during a simple stroll in the woods.
Exercising outdoors is extremely beneficial.
If you're tired of your daily gym routine, try working out outdoors. There are many reasons why exercising outside can be more beneficial than training in an enclosed space. First, you won't have to worry about gym membership fees. Second, working out outdoors can be a new challenge for your body: the terrain is constantly changing, providing an additional obstacle to overcome. There are also many outdoor recreational sports you can participate in: softball, kickball, lacrosse, and many more. Even if you don't consider yourself a dedicated athlete, joining a sports team can motivate you to incorporate a new lifestyle habit into your routine: exercising regularly while enjoying the outdoors. It might even be a good excuse for a fun outing with friends. Finally, exercising in nature is free! You can go for a walk anytime, jog, use your body weight, or go for a hike. Where working out at your local gym might seem like a chore, exercising outdoors is much more fun and offers numerous benefits.
Nature has been proven to alleviate depression.
There are many reasons why someone might want to deepen their connection with nature, and one of them is that nature can improve your mood and reduce feelings of anger or stress. Research has shown that mood disorders can be alleviated or even eliminated by spending more time outdoors. For example, if you're experiencing work problems, financial difficulties, or health issues, a good way to relieve stress is to take a walk in the woods. It may not solve all your problems, but it will give you greater peace of mind. For people with mood disorders who don't want to take medication, turning to nature is an excellent and free resource for self-care and health. Of course, nature isn't a cure-all for serious illnesses, but it can certainly alleviate some symptoms and encourage the healing process.
Nature could improve our cognitive function.
Of the studies Recent studies suggest that being immersed in nature can indeed reduce feelings of isolation, calm us, and even improve our mood. Nature can also enhance our cognitive function. It may do so by lowering our blood pressure and stress hormones, thereby reducing over-excitement of the nervous system and alleviating anxiety. Without any lingering stress after a hard day of studying or a long day at work, we can regain control of our thoughts and start a great day well-equipped. A growing body of research has even shown that attention disorders such as Attention Deficit Disorder are alleviated in outdoor environments. This is attributed to the calmer and improved mood.
