Life after COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected us all in many ways. Whether you're a business owner, someone who works in the insurance industry, or the 9-to-5 type of person, you've felt the effects of the outbreak in one way or another.

It's hard to imagine a world after COVID-19. You might be wondering how soon we can ditch our masks, leave hand sanitizer behind, and return to normal social norms. For some, the answer is not soon enough.

Leaving the TÀD

The phrase "from the comfort of your own home" has taken on a new meaning thanks to the pandemic. Where it once implied relaxation or perhaps a better alternative to the daily commute, it may have lost much of its luster after these challenging months. "Too much of a good thing" has become all too true for many who are beginning to miss their old routines. Many will be scrambling to get back in the saddle, eager to slip back into their familiar ways and embrace life as it once was.

For many others, the most pressing concern is: how can they emerge from this stupor? How can they erase more than a year of isolation, distance, and caution around others? We have spent so many months at home, alone, working remotely or not at all, and the time spent in fear has left us wary. COVID-19 has left an indelible mark on us. It will take a collective effort to repair the damage caused by this pandemic.

Laughter is one of the best ways to lighten the burden of pandemic-related stress. While it may be difficult to find enough to laugh about or even see a glimmer of hope, often simply sharing a funny meme, joke, or comical routine can help them get through this stressful time.

Laughter can be a powerful coping mechanism. A Mayo Clinic study found that laughter can induce physical changes in our bodies. It can soothe tension by stimulating several organs; when we laugh, we increase our intake of oxygen-rich air, which in turn stimulates our circulation, heart, lungs, and muscles, and increases the endorphins released by our brain. Laughter can also activate and relieve our stress response. A hearty laugh ignites and then cools our stress response, which can raise and then lower our blood pressure, leading to an easy feeling of relaxation.

Insurance and COVID-19

The global implications of COVID-19 have impacted many industries, including insurance. The insurance sector has already undergone significant recent changes due to increasing digitalization and climate change, but the COVID-19 pandemic has been a turning point for many. COVID-19-related litigation, business disruptions, and reduced travel have all affected our exposures for better and for worse. We may soon return to our usual commutes to work, which means we will need to use our vehicles more. As you may know, the more you use your vehicle, the higher your car insurance rates will be to reflect your increased exposure. For business owners, getting back into the swing of business as usual could mean reintroducing proper risk management procedures and remaining vigilant about potential disruptions if the virus is still widespread.

One thing is certain: we must be patient, understanding, and willing to care for those around us as we begin this societal integration. In this arduous struggle, we must believe that the strength of the human spirit will prevail.
